IronStone Bank Announces Plans to Open in Three New States

Expansion marks bank's first foray in U.S. Heartland, adds new Texas market

March 12, 2007

RALEIGH, N.C. — IronStone Bank, a subsidiary of First Citizens BancShares Inc. (Nasdaq: FCNCA), today announced plans to open offices in three new states (Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma) and add a third Texas market.

IronStone Bank has filed for regulatory approval from the Office of Thrift Supervision to open branches in Kansas City, Oklahoma City and Dallas. IronStone currently has offices in Austin and recently announced plans to open a branch in Houston.

“We believe these markets represent a great opportunity for IronStone Bank,” said Lewis R. Holding, chairman of First Citizens BancShares. “These are high-growth locations where we can serve the customers — primarily business owners, professionals and members of the medical community — that value our relationship-driven approach to banking. We’re excited about IronStone’s future in these communities.”

IronStone Bank has filed to open six offices in the following locations:

Kansas City Area (Kansas and Missouri)

  • 7950 College Blvd., Overland Park, Kan.
  • Two Brush Creek Building, Suite 150, 2 Emmanuel Cleaver II Blvd., Kansas City, Mo.

Oklahoma City, Okla.

  • 3535 NW 58th Street, First Floor
  • Intersection of West Memorial Road and Meridian Avenue (northwest quadrant)

Dallas, Texas

  • Uptown Center, 2626 Howell Street, Suite 110
  • Lakeside Village Shopping Center, 9669 North Central Expressway, Suite 130

Upon receiving regulatory and local approvals, the bank expects to open these offices in summer 2007, first as loan production offices and then as full-service branches. IronStone will announce members of the local management team in the coming months.

Since opening its first office in Austin in September 2002, IronStone Bank has expanded to 22 branches in Texas, Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. IronStone also has 19 locations in the Atlanta metro region of Georgia and 15 offices in Florida.

IronStone Bank focuses on building and serving longstanding relationships with individual customers, small- to mid-sized businesses, professionals and the medical community. Customers can access financial services through the bank’s Customer Contact Center toll free at 1.866.IB DIRECT (1.866.423.4732) and through the Internet at ironstonebank.com.

First Citizens BancShares has $15.7 billion in assets. Its lead subsidiary is First Citizens Bank, which has 340 branches in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland.
