550 Hours of Service to Triangle Nonprofits During “One Amazing Week”
September 26, 2003
RALEIGH, N.C. - First Citizens associates, family members and friends demonstrated their corporate citizenship last week (Sept. 13-20) by taking part in community events during a Triangle-wide “One Amazing Week.”
During the eight-day community event, 214 First Citizens volunteers donated 550 hours to help local nonprofit organizations. The hours donated have an equivalent dollar value of $9,097, based on a formula from The Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College that places a value of $16.54/hour on volunteer time.
“Our associates carried First Citizens’ brand promise to ‘Do something amazing’ into the community and vividly demonstrated their dedication to service excellence,” said Jim Hyler, vice chairman of First Citizens Bank. “I am extremely proud of their efforts last week, and throughout the year, to make the Triangle a better place to work and live.”
Headquartered in Raleigh, First Citizens Bank puts strong emphasis on community involvement especially in four key areas: economic and community development, education, arts and culture and health and human services.
First Citizens associates gave back to the community in a variety of ways during One Amazing Week. Volunteers picked up trash and hurricane debris at Walnut Creek as part of Big Sweep, packaged more than 3,000 pounds of food and hurricane relief boxes for the Food Bank of North Carolina and delivered food to the elderly for Meals on Wheels.
They also worked on after-school projects with children at the Boys & Girls Clubs and raised more than $10,790 for research by participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. Bank associates also volunteered with Kids Voting North Carolina/Wake County and the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music (PineCone).
Founded in 1898, First Citizens operates 338 branches in more than 200 cities and towns in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Headquartered in Raleigh, the bank has $12.39 billion in assets.
